    The Norwegian Centre for Integrated Care and Telemedicine (NST) is a consolidation of multidisciplinary and previously separate entities at University Hospital of North Norway in Tromsø, Norway, that work with Information and communication technologies (ICT) to enhance integrated healthcare.
    NST is a National Centre of Telemedicine Expertise in Norway, and an international leader in the field of Telemedicine. NST is a research organization with 200 employees situated in Tromsø, and has been designated as a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Telemedicine since 2002.
    Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine co-founded the Tromsø Telemedicine Laboratory (TTL) in 2006 together with industrial and academic partners. TTL is a Centre for Research-based Innovation combining human caring with new technologies, in order to provide better health care for those with chronic diseases, and reduce the growing burden on the health care system.

    We are seeking a PhD candidate to conduct research within the research project “Mobile Medical Mentor (M3)”, funded by the Northern Norway Regional Health Authority research program. This project aims to develop new mobile tools for remote mentoring of surgeons. The PhD scholarship is offered for a period of 3 years at Norwegian Centre for Integrated Care and Development, University Hospital of North Norway. The PhD scholar will be enrolled in the PhD program at the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Tromsø. The PhD scholar will work on challenging research problems within the University Hospital of North Norway surgical departments, Dept. of Colorectal Surgery, University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Cleveland, OH, USA, and other international cooperating institutions.
    Research issues



    •Engineer mobile surgical mentoring solutions
    •Establish to what degree anatomical landmarks visualized during surgery can be identified on remote mobile terminals as mobile phones and ipad, compared to stationary monitors
    •Record, model and analyze workflow within the operating theater with and without remote mentoring
    •Evaluate whether mobile mentoring affects knife time and response times for senior surgeons on call
    •User testing in labs and real environments

    Applicants must have a MSc degree in Telemedicine and ehealth, Medical Informatics, Computer Science or similar. Almost completed MSc thesis work can be submitted for evaluation. A background that covers video based communication and human computer interaction is advantageous. Solid scientific qualifications, relevant MSc research topics and personal qualities are important. Applicants must be qualified for PhD studies at University of Tromsø, please see the web pages for the Faculty of Science and Technology for information about PhD studies at University of Tromsø. Summarized the requirements are a 3 year bachelor degree and a 2 year master degree with some exceptions for specific countries. It is a prerequisite that the PhD scholar applies for and is granted admission to the University of Tromsø’s PhD studies as soon as possible after employment. Candidates will be required to enroll in a PhD program within the period of employment, and must sign a contract regulating the period of employment.



    Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree:

    2 % of the salary will be deducted for mandatory membership in the National Pension Fund.

    Foreign applicants must document a TOEFL score of 550 or higher, or IELTS score of 6.0 or higher.

    The application must include information about education, exams and earlier experience. Certified copies of certificates and diplomas must be enclosed. Relevant scientific works should be submitted. Joint works will be taken into account. In cases where it is difficult to determine the applicant’s contribution, a short note of explanation should be supplied.
